Authors Guide

JMBSR aimed to promote a coherent international forum for original quality research output in area of medical and basic sciences. The Journal is a peer-reviewed publication of original research papers, review articles, technical reports and letter/short communications on a diverse range of medical sciences. The journal encourages submission of manuscripts with relevance to (but not limited to) clinical medicine, basic medicine, physiotherapy, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, surgical research, public health and epidemiology, pharmacology and traditional medicine, biotechnology, nutrition and food science and radiation medicine. The Journal will endeavor to process manuscripts from the time of receipt of submission to publication within the minimum possible time.

Authors are advised to follow the instructions for submission to minimize delays in the publication process. The frequency of publications will be at least one volume per year. Each volume will have three (3) Issues. Papers accepted for publication becomes a copy right of JMBSR, and authors will be asked to sign a transfer of copyright form. Articles cannot be published until a signed copyright form has been received.

Manuscript Submission
The manuscript should be submitted via the journal website (https://jmbsr.com.ng/index.php/jmbsr) which is using the Online Journal System (OJS). https://jmbsr.com.ng/index.php/jmbsr/about/submissions

The article should have the following format:

Format
Manuscript will be published under the following sections:

  • Original research reports
  • Critical and analytical reviews
  • Short research reports
  • Editorials and commentaries commissioned by the Editorial board
  • Letters and commentaries commissioned by the Editorial board
  • Letters to the Editor relating to materials previously published in the journal.
  • Book reviews

The manuscript should be written in font size 11 and double-spaced using Arial font type. Only e-copies of the manuscript are accepted. A4 paper e-copies, with margins 30 mm is accepted for submission. The quality of the images (if any) must meet the standard of the journal and must be editable. All pages should be numbered consecutively in the bottom right corner beginning with the title page. Indent new paragraphs. Groupings for the experiments must be named (i.e “groups 1, 2 or A, B” is not acceptable. Rather it should be control, X and Y groups) depending on what the research entails. All manuscripts must be written in British English.

 

The cover/title page

The cover page should include the following:

  • Article title, corresponding author, affiliation, full postal address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address. The names, affiliations and contact details of the co-authors should be also clearly indicated. Please ensure that these details are printed on the cover page only, and do not appear on any other page of the manuscript.
  • Acknowledgment, if any. One or more statements should specify 1) contributions that need acknowledging but do not justify authorship, such as general support by a departmental chair; 2) acknowledgments of technical help; and 3) acknowledgments of financial and material support, which should specify the nature of the support. This should be included on the title page of the manuscript and not in the main article file.4) Source(s) of support in the form of grants, equipment, drugs, or all of these.
  • If the manuscript was presented as part of a meeting, the organization, place, and exact date on which it was read. A full statement to the Editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant publication of the same or very similar work. Any such work should be referred to specifically and referenced in the new paper. Copies of such material should be included with the submitted paper, to help the Editor decide how to handle the matter.
  • Registration number in case of a clinical trial and where it is registered (name of the registry and its URL)
  • Conflicts of Interest of each author/ contributor. A statement of financial or other relationships that might lead to a conflict of interest, if that information is not included in the manuscript itself or in an author's form
  • A statement that the manuscript has been read and approved by all the authors, that the requirements for authorship as stated earlier in this document have been met, and that each author believes that the manuscript represents honest work if that information is not provided in another form (see below); and

 

Title Page

The title should be concise with 15 to 20 words. This should be accompanied by a short title of not more than 50 characters (including spaces). The Names of Authors and Institutional affiliation should be provided. The format for author’s names should be first name, middle name (if any) and surname.  The names of all authors/ contributors (with their highest academic degrees, designation and affiliations) and name(s) of department(s) and/ or institution(s) to which the work should be credited.  

 

Abstract and Keyword

The abstract should be structured in the format below:

  1. Word count of not more than 300 words.
  2. Three (3) to six (6) keywords

abstract should be in the following subsections:

  1. Background
  2. Methodology
  • Results and
  1. Conclusion
  2. Keywords

 

Manuscript

The main text should be arranged in this order:

  1. Introduction
  2. Methodology
  • Results
  1. Discussion
  2. Summary/conclusion
  3. Acknowledgments and statements of conflicting interests
  • References

 

The whole document should not be more than 6000 words (excluding tables’/ figures’ title and legends, references, and appendices).  Article longer than standard length will attract additional fees per page. All pages must be numbered in the bottom righthand corner.

Blinded Article file:

The manuscript must not contain any mention of the authors' names or initials or the institution at which the study was done or acknowledgments. Page headers/running titles can include the title but not the authors' names. Manuscripts not in compliance with The Journal's blinding policy will be returned to the corresponding author. The main text of the article, beginning from Abstract to References (including tables) should be in this file. Use Microsoft word doc or rtf files. Do not zip the files. Limit the file size to 400 kb. Do not incorporate images in the file. If file size is large, graphs can be submitted as images separately without incorporating them in the article file to reduce the size of the file. The pages should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the first page of the blinded article file.

 

Change of Authorship

The sequence of authors list is expected to be considered carefully by the authors before submitting their manuscript and provided at the time of original submission. However, any addition, deletion or rearrangement in the authorship list should be made only before the acceptance of the manuscript and MUST be approved by the journal editor. To request the changes in authorship, the corresponding author must submit the following to the editorial office @ info.jmbsr@gmail.com:

  1. The reason for the change in the author list
  2. Signed statement of agreement for the requested change from all listed authors and from the author to be removed or added.

The corresponding author is the one individual who takes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during the manuscript submission, peer review, and publication process. The corresponding author typically ensures that all the journal’s administrative requirements, such as providing details of authorship, ethics committee approval, clinical trial registration documentation, and disclosures of relationships and activities, are properly completed and reported.

 

Statistics 

All Greek letters especially the most common mathematical symbols need to be identified on the manuscript. All non-Greek letters that are used as statistical symbols for algebraic variables should be in italics.

Units of Measurement

The journal adopts the International system of unit (SI) or the metric system except for measurements of time, which have no metric equivalents. 

Images: Submit good-quality color images. Each image should be less than 1024 kb (1 MB) in size. Size

of the image can be reduced by decreasing the actual height and width of the images (keep up to 1240 x

800 pixels or 5-6 inches). Images can be submitted as jpeg files. Do not zip the files. Legends for the

figures/images should be included at the end of the article file. 

 

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures are to be incorporated within the manuscript as close as possible to where it is first mentioned. Only one table or figure(s) per page. Every table column should have a heading. Only the top, second and last horizontal lines should be in the Table. All vertical table lines should be omitted. Each figure must be labeled with the correct figure number and short title (figures for a particular experiment should be grouped together as one differentiated by letters).  All figures and tables mentioned in the text must be numbered in the order in which they are mentioned. The acceptable file format for Figures is the jpeg. The Editorial office may request for a TIFF format of a figure after the paper is accepted. Greyscale must be a minimum of 300 dpi.

 

References

References should be cited using the Vancouver convention, with superscript figures in square brackets in the main body of the text relating to a list of referenced sources at the end of the text in order of citation (e.g Confirmed by other studies[113]). Note that journal article citations using Vancouver style list the first six authors followed by et al.:
